Constellations
Ethiopia
Across the Omo Valley of Ethiopia, Suri children gather earth from their homeland, mixing white ash, ochre, and mineral-rich pigments into liquid paint. With laughter and imagination, they splatter one another's bodies in spontaneous patterns that exist only for a moment before rain, sweat, or the passing hours return them to bare skin.
These fleeting constellations are more than decoration. They are expressions of creativity, identity, and belonging, born from the landscape itself. The body becomes both canvas and storyteller, carrying the colors of the earth in a celebration of youth and connection.
Like the stars that inspired its title, each pattern appears only briefly, reminding us that beauty is often most profound because it cannot be held. It lives in the moment, then returns to the land from which it came.
